The Guest House

I Bought These for You by Mary Sherman
I Bought These for You, a photo by Mary Sherman on Flickr.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, who
violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame,
the malice, meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

  1. Lately some of those uninvited guest have appeared at my front door and I am trying hard to remember they were sent to me as teachers of a lesson I still need to learn...

  2. I know Anyes, it's often tricky. The truth is we always have a choice; we can let them in; or not; we can learn a lesson; or not. Everything is perfect in every moment;throwing out the "haves" and the "shoulds" isn't always a bad thing.

  3. Such an interesting outlook and look at those 'guests' - welcome..or not - that come into our lives. It's a reminder that no feeling is final..that it's just 'visiting' for a short while.
